How anyone checks a draw

This site runs the leaderboard and the draw. Being told the winner was picked fairly is worth nothing from the people holding both, so the draw is built so you never have to take our word for it.

  1. Before entries open, the site rolls a random 64-character number and publishes only its fingerprint. A fingerprint is easy to make from the number and impossible to work backwards, so publishing it commits us to the number without giving it away.
  2. At the draw, the number itself is published. Fingerprint it yourself and you get back the string that was posted days earlier, which proves the number was not picked afterwards to suit the result.
  3. The winner falls out of it. Every ticket in the hat is fingerprinted alongside that number, and the lowest result wins. Same number and same hat, same winner, every time and on any machine.

A cancelled draw opens its number too, and stays on this page. That is what stops a draw being opened, looked at and quietly abandoned.
